Graduate Freshers' Week Part I

Next week is official back to school time and I can’t wait for a jam-packed freshers’ week, getting drunk and bonding over favourite kebab fillings. Or not. Admittedly, I wouldn’t really look forward to a week of awkward conversations and trying to dance enthusiastically to bad music at 2am. But I am even more unhappy at the prospect of Monday’s graduate freshers’ wine and cheese evening in a marquee and, well, not much else apart from a couple of hours at freshers’ fair on Thursday.

My worry is that, in general, graduate freshers are less likely to bump into one and other than undergraduates. Firstly, most of us are not in halls. So there will be no communal bonding over cold showers or kitchens without toasters. Second, we don’t have lectures and the seminars we do have are, at least in my case, infrequent and in small groups. Therefore, its quite unlikely that I will have an opportunity to meet most of the rest of my year – apart from at organised events like those in freshers’ week.

Don’t get me wrong, this concern is not about ending up friendless and lonely. The great thing about London is that everyone seems to be moving here, if they aren’t here already. Its more analogous to starting at a large corporation who have decided to skip the “get to know your colleagues” stage. That stage is important because it both gives you a feeling of belonging and it also introduces you to potential contacts and advisors who can make all the difference as your career progresses.

Of course a University is different to a company, but the “get to know your colleagues” stage for those at the beginning of their career is important for exactly the same reasons:

Some people, myself included, might inwardly cringe at the phrase “feeling of belonging”. But what it gets at is something any organisation should foster in its members. No one works well if they feel like an outsider, and we all work better if we feel some kind of loyalty to who we are working for or with. At the moment, I still feel very much like an outside and (clearly!) have more criticism than loyalty to the university where I am about to study.

Missing out on getting to know my year means missing out on meeting many of my future colleagues. Or worse, it means I am missing out on meeting many people who are researching something that relates to my area and could have been a great help this year. The value of networking is just as great in the academic sphere.

However, I can’t go any further with this argument right now; I think I should probably wait til next week, when I have actually been on campus. You never know there might be a secret graduate underground party scene that they don’t tell you about til you arrive.
